I got hooked on açaí bowls after I visited Hawaii for the first time and was disappointed to find so few options when I arrived home to Chicago. That was years ago and since then açaí bowls have definitely risen in popularity but still, the majority of what you find at cafes or smoothie shops are all infused with tons of sugar. You might as well be eating a bowl of ice cream. Personally, I like to eat açaí bowls when I’m craving something light and fresh but want something more substantial than a juice or smoothie. In an effort to satisfy my cravings and not break the bank, I started making them at home and the recipe is quite simple.
Açaí Bowl Recipe
- 7 oz. Frozen Açaí Unsweetened (2 packets)
- 2 Bananas
- ~1/2 C. Granola
- ~4 Large Strawberries
- ~1/2 C. Blueberries
- Honey (optional)
- Slice strawberries and one banana and set aside
- Blend frozen açaí and one banana until smooth
- Pour blended acai into a bowl and top with granola, sliced banana, sliced strawberries and blueberries
- Drizzle honey on top for added sweetness (optional)
And that’s all there is to it! Since this meal is already very fruit heavy and full of natural sugar, I prefer to use unsweetened açaí and always try to find the granola with the least amount of sugar. Currently, I’m using Trader Joe’s brand for both. Another cool thing about açaí bowls it that there’s a ton of flexibility with the toppings. You can pretty much use any fruit you have on hand and as little or as much as you want. I personally love the classic trio of strawberry, blueberry and banana but I’ve tried kiwi, raspberry, pineapple, mango and have never been disappointed. It’s also a great way to sneak in healthy additives like bee pollen, coconut flakes, chia seeds, cacao nibs, etc.
